Kenneth “Leo” Reed, 84, of Amarillo, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at Cox-Rowley 4180 Canyon Drive, with Dr. Buddy Young officiating.
Leo was born on August 31, 1938 in Gasoline, Texas to Isom and Elva Reed. He graduated from Flomot High School and earned his associates degree at Amarillo College. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Leo married Helena Mokray in 1967 at the Reed family home in Quitaque, Texas. He worked as a rancher in his early life and went on to work for Airstream and D&M Trailer Sales before he had a long 30-year career at Sears as a service technician where he enjoyed many stories of his customers and their lawnmowers. After retiring from Lowe’s in 2001, Leo enjoyed volunteer work. As a Texas Master Gardener, he proudly volunteered at High Plains Children’s Home, where he shared his love for gardening with the kids by helping them raise a garden and enter their vegetables in the Tri-State Fair. Leo was a very accomplished woodworker. He and Helena made cars and dolls for the Headstart program in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Leo always saw the wonders of nature. He was active in the Texas Master Naturalists and he volunteered many years as an interpreter at the gift shop in Palo Duro Canyon. Whether gardening, nature, or any other subject, Leo had plenty of advice and stories for everyone. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helena Reed; two sisters, Elizabeth McDonald and Juanita Gowin; and two brothers, James Reed and Cecil Reed.
Survivors include two daughters, Vera Little of Austin, TX, and Lisa Lanier (Alan) of Amarillo; a son, Paul Reed (Kristina) of Bushland; two brothers, E. G. Reed (Barb) of Quitaque, TX, and George Reed and wife Roy of Silverton, TX; a sister, Alma Monk (Roy) of Evergreen, CO; a granddaughter, Gina Reed (Kalin Denney) Kansas City, MO, and the cherished family of his neighborhood.
