Leota LaVerne Jones was born February 10, 1932 in Clarendon, Texas to Leslie and Eunice Carlile.
She attended Amarillo High School and Amarillo College. She went to work at American National Bank at age 18. Banking was her passion and became her career. She retired from Texas American Bank as Vice President after 37 years of service. Leota dedicated her lifetime unselfishly to helping women and her community.
As a Bank Officer Leota was responsible for developing the Special Services Department where
she helped many widowed women learn to become self-sufficient with their finances which at
that time was not the normal. It was more than just a job for her as she formed a special bond
with these women. They all carried checks that included the Texas Blue Bonnet icon in the
corner and traveled the globe on special trips planned for the "Blue Bonnets". She developed
and taught popular financial planning seminars for the Bank called "Money Money Money".
She served on various local Boards-Woman's Division of Amarillo Chamber of Commerce,
Amarillo community center, and meals on wheels. Close to her heart was the business and
Professional Women's organization. Leota was instrumental in founding Magic Plains BPW in
Borger and Center City BPW, in Amarillo. She was recognized by that organization with various
awards such as Women of the Year and the Caduceus Award which recognized her work
mentoring women. Most recently she helped form a women's Sunday school class "Seeds of
Faith" for married and unmarried women who attend church without a spouse. She taught
Sunday school for girls and women for many years and Vacation Bible School for the great
grandchildren she loved so very much.
She married the love of her life, W.D. "Dub" Jones on September 2, 1950. Together they built a
large family of friends through involvement in their church home, First Baptist Church, Sunshine Shufflers 42 club, various Bridge Clubs, WAGGS and High Plains Motor Home Clubs, and Pioneer Promenaders Square Dance Club.
She is survived by two children, daughter Candice Naylor and husband Russell of Fritch, and son Byron
and wife Chrys of Arlington. Seven grandchildren Denise, Shanna, Stephen, Jim and wife Tyla, Kristen
and husband Jerod, Ashleigh and husband Christopher and Allyson. 14 great grandchildren Colby, Jacob, Justin, Alexis, Stephanie, Josh, Joe, Kash, James, Cooper, Hendrix, Andrew, Kellyn, and Brielyn. And two great great grandchildren Kaden and Electra.
