Lonnie "L.A." Andrew Popejoy

Lonnie Andrew “L.A.” Popejoy was born April 7, 1926 in Hycoal, WV to Torrance and Vida (Skeen) Popejoy and passed away February 5, 2022 at the age of 95.

Services for L.A. will be held at 10:00 on Friday February 11, 2022 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home Chapel located at 4180 Canyon Drive. Final internment at the Veteran’s National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM with his wife Oza Lee.

He volunteered in the United States Army in August of 1943 and campaigned in North Africa and Italy. He was wounded in Italy in September of 1946 and he was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Medal, and several campaign medals.

L.A. married Oza Lee Eastepp on July 20, 1946 and retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons of 27 years in 1990. He was a life member of disabled American Veterans and the NRA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 sisters; 3 brothers; 1 grandson; and his wife Oza Lee.

L.A. is survived by his four children; Glenda Yarbrough of Rawls, TX; Kathy Sumerford of Amarillo, TX; Andy Popejoy and wife Sharon of Montrose, CO; Sid Popejoy and wife Kelly of La Veta, CO. Survivors also include extended family members, Chuck Abston of Jones, OK; Larry Elmore of Amarillo, TX; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, and 1 great-great-great grandchild.
