Mary Alice Bomar-Edwards

February 24, 1921 — March 5, 2016

Mary Alice Bomar Edwards, 95, passed away March 5, 2016 in Lubbock, Texas. She was born on February 24, 1921 in Gadsden, Alabama the fourth child of Rachel and Joseph Whorton. She attended school in House, New Mexico where she met Virgil Anson Bomar. Mary Alice married Virgil on January 7, 1939 in Clovis, New Mexico. Mary and Virgil had their two sons in New Mexico later moving to Hereford where Virgil ran several gas stations and Mary worked for Helen's and Little's clothing stores. They were members of First Baptist Church. After Virgil's death in 1978, she met Calvin Edwards. They married in 1979 and were married until his death in 1993. She loved nice clothing and could never be seen without her high heels. She worked the Festival of Trees at the Senior Citizens for many years and was an active member of the Pilot Club. She received many awards doing what she loved. Mary enjoyed dancing and playing dominoes at the Senior Citizens Center. She also treasured her special friendship with Don McNeese. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters - Stella Whorton, Ella Howell, and Leecy Lott and two brothers - Tom Whorton and Clyde Whorton. She is survived by her two sons: Don Bomar and wife Glenna of Smithville, and Wayne Bomar and wife Jodie of Cleburne, together with six grandchildren- Brenda Galloway and husband Bob of Frisco, Crystal Dockery of Hunt, Jo Dawn Bomar of Smithville, Dusty Bomar and wife Kym of Cleburne, Rob Bomar and wife Shannon of Cleburne, and Sam Bomar of Cleburne, 13 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; one sister - Betty Upton of Melrose, NM; and one brother - Rusty Whorton and wife Jeanne from Temple. A celebration of life will be held Monday, March 7th, 2016 at 10:00 am at at the First Baptist Church in Hereford with Rev. Kyle Streun officiating. The family will greet guests immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org). The family of Mary Alice also wishes to extend a sincere appreciation to the nurses and caregivers of Bender Terrace Alzheimer's/Dementia Unit in Lubbock for their years of care
