Mary was born on February 21, 1928 in Childress to Homer and Vera Cawthon. She moved to Amarillo as a child, where she graduated from Amarillo High School in 1946. She then went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she worked for many years before working for Santa Fe Railroad. There, she did many jobs, including clerical work and physical duties around the yard, retiring in the late 1980's. Mary was known to be a strong and independent woman, having devoted herself to raising her children as a single mother. She overcame many obstacles throughout her life, many of which would have slowed someone less willful than she. She was active her entire life, participating in competitive bowling as well as having a great artistic talent expressed through music and painting.
Mary was known to be spunky and full of life. She was loving and welcoming to those she met, including any stray animal that needed love. Her family and friends know her best for her great love of shopping. Whether it was the local thrift store or garage sales, Mary was known to always be on the search for jewelry, treasures and pretty things. Above all, Mary loved her family. She loved being a Mimi and mother and cherished time spent with her family.
She is survived by her son, David LeGrand and wife Gloria of Amarillo; daughter, D'Ann Walker and husband Doug of Amarillo; 4 grandchildren, Jamie Milton and husband Shon, Jordan Byrd and husband Michael, Christopher LeGrand and Clayton LeGrand and wife Cheraye; 2 great grandchildren, Owen and Alice Milton; 2 nieces, Sylvia Johns and husband David of Arizona and Earleen Huff of Utah and several great nieces, extended family and friends who loved her dearly.
