Mary Cecile (Powell) Truitt

Canyon

Mary Truitt, 87 of Canyon Texas passed away October 7, 2023. Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday October 14, 2023 at Dreamland Cemetery, 26500 S US HWY 87 Canyon, Texas.

Viewing will be from 5:00—7:00 PM on Friday October 13, 2023 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home located at 4180 Canyon Drive in Amarillo, Texas.

Mary was born on March 14, 1936 to Victor and Mary Powell in Elkton, Kentucky.  She grew up on the family tobacco farm. At the age of 17 she graduated from Elkton High School. Mary later went on to college to study nursing at Murray State College in Murray Kentucky earning her diploma. While there she met and married her husband of 64 years LD Truitt in 1957.  As the wife of an active duty officer in the United States Army she lived in a variety of locations primarily in the southern part of the United States.

The nursing profession was her passion.  Mary held an active nursing license for over fifty years working as a registered nurse in different healthcare related positions. In 1971 Mary and family moved to Canyon Texas.  She started back to college at the West Texas State University, now West Texas A&M University earning her Bachelors of Science in Nursing.  Later, she earned her Masters of Education at WTAMU and a Masters Degree in Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. Mary began teaching part time for West Texas A&M University Department of Nursing and quickly moved into a full time nursing instructor position. She went on to teach Medical Surgical Nursing for over 22 years WTAMU.  Mary was a member and faculty sponsor of Sigma Theta Tau the National Nursing Honor Society. After retiring from WTAMU Mary enjoyed traveling and gardening.

Mary is preceded death by her husband LD Truitt of Canyon TX, her brother Victor Powell Jr. of Elkton Kentucky and her parents, Victor and Mary Powell of Elkton Kentucky.

Survivors include her two sons Michael Truitt of Canyon Texas, and Scott Truitt of Hammond Louisiana; 4 grandchildren Michael Truitt Jr., Micheala Truitt, Alexander Truitt and Augustas Truitt; and her brother Hayden Powell of Elkton Kentucky

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made the Mary Cecil Powell Truitt nursing scholarship at West Texas A&M University in Canyon Texas.
