Norma Jean Burt

Norma Jean Burt, 75, of Amarillo died Saturday, March 15, 2014. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cox Funeral Home Benton Chapel with Don Ralston, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Norma Jean was born Jan. 7, 1939, in Pampa to Norman and Della Glenn. She moved to Canyon as a child, where she graduated from Canyon High School. She moved to Amarillo in 1961, where she married Bill Burt on Aug. 17, 1977. He preceded her in death after 35 years of marriage on April 4, 2013. She worked alongside Bill at their family businesses, including Quick Check Battery and Electric, five Mr. Burger Drive-ins, a chicken restaurant and their lumber yard. Together, they played bluegrass music at the Big Texan Steak Ranch for more than five years and were instrumental in forming the Panhandle Old Time Music and Bluegrass Association in the 1970s. She was an especially accomplished musician who was self-taught in many of the instruments she was able to play. She was a member of New Beginnings Gospel Center. Norma Jean worked as an office manager for several doctors and for nursing home administration. She was devoted to her Biblical studies and always able to offer Biblical encouragement to those in need. She enjoyed entertaining others with her music, especially at the nursing homes She also was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include a son, Ray Gunnels of Amarillo; three daughters, Debra Kay Campoamor of Claude, Cindy Crawford and husband Jerry of Amarillo and Shelly Akerly and husband Bruce of Coppell; two brothers, Bill Glenn and wife Delores and Jim Glenn and wife Carol, all of Amarillo; a sister, Shirley Glandon of Abilene; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
