Doris Ann King, 89, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, October 24, 2018. Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Monday at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Friday at the Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Dr. Doris was born July 15, 1929 in Sherman to Tom and Ruth Lawson. She graduated from Bells High School in Bells, Texas. She married G.C. King, Jr. in 1955. She furthered her education at Austin College and West Texas State College, ultimately earning her master’s degree in education. Doris taught school for 39 years. The majority of that time was spent working in special education at North Heights and Caprock High School. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing 42 at the Senior Citizen’s Center. She was a member of South Georgia Baptist Church. Doris adored her dog, Abby. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, G.C. King, Jr.; a son, Cleveland Lawson King; and a grandson, Brandon King. Survivors include her son, Bruce King and wife Melody of Amarillo; a grandson, Bryan King and wife Angelica of Amarillo; and five great-grandchildren, Hannah, Emily, Madison, Ethan, and Reece. The family suggests memorial donations be made to Amarillo Rescue Shelter, 12500 FM 1541, Amarillo, TX 79118; or to Amarillo SPCA, 11901 S. Coulter St, Amarillo, TX 79119.
