Roger Whitmire Obituary

Roger L. Whitmire, 76, of Amarillo went home on Saturday, May 4, 2019. Graveside Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Memorial Park Cemetery. Roger was born March 30, 1943 in Anderson, South Carolina to Ern Melvin and Sudie Elizabeth Whitmire. He graduated in 1961 from Anderson Boys High School. Roger married the love of his life, Shelby Bannister on April 23, 1961 in Hartwell, Georgia. While Roger had no formal degree, he had a degree in life. He spent his childhood on the family farm, working from dawn till dusk. He was always proud to say “I am a jack of all trades and a master of none”. If it was broke, you knew he could fix it, no matter what. His resilience, work ethic, and wit made him successful in everything he did.  Roger loved hot peppers. He would casually eat ghost peppers and Carolina reapers, and dare you to take a bite with him. He was famous to say “it ain’t hot” with a beaming smile on his face. His favorite place to be was outside. You could always find him working in the yard, planting flowers and mowing grass. Roger loved wood working. He built hope chests, plaques, and clocks with intricate inlays for his beloved family members. He was a caring man with a sweet soul and a soft side he rarely showed. He was the patriarch of our family, and a rock that we knew we could lean on. Roger will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He will be remembered as a loving husband, daddy, brother and poppa. Roger was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Larry Whitmire and Ralph Whitmire. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shelby Whitmire; two daughters, Kay Whitmire with wife Tina Ensey, Teresa Spone with husband Gene Gaston; a brother, Leroy Whitmire with wife Nancy; a sister, Carol Huff; four grandchildren, Eli Poore, Cody Houchin with wife Jamaiah, Kylie Spone and Jennifer Bourque; three great-grandchildren, Asher Whitmire, Brilee Houchin and Kynadee Houchin.
