Patricia Joan Sherwood Jones died July 9, 2022, at age 81. Her memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at the Cox-Rowley Funeral Home Chapel, 4180 Canyon Dr., Amarillo. Private interment will be at Llano Cemetery.
Patricia was born May 2, 1941, to Karl L. and Alta M. Sherwood in Memphis, TN. She was their only child and quite the tomboy until the onset of rheumatoid arthritis which almost killed her when she was seven years old. The family had just moved to Wichita, KS, and Patricia remained so ill that she missed what would have been her second-grade school year in the classroom. When Wichita began a trial homebound school program the following year, Patricia was proud to be one of the children chosen to participate. After two years in the homebound program, Patricia was able to return to the classroom and even skip ahead to finish sixth grade the same year as she would have had she not become ill. Her homebound teacher, Miss Pearl Miltner, held a special place in Patricia’s heart for the rest of her life.
Patricia’s father accepted a job offer in Amarillo in 1957, and Patricia became part of the first graduating class of Tascosa High School in 1959. Patricia met her beloved husband Robert on a double date in high school. Robert, from Brookings, SD, was an airman in the 688th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron stationed at the Amarillo Air Force Base. After graduating high school, Patricia went to work for Mead’s Bakery as a bookkeeper. Robert went to work for Western Electric Company after being honorably discharged from the Air Force. They married in 1961.
Patricia very much enjoyed accounting and completed accounting courses at Amarillo College. Patricia and Robert started a family in 1963, and she discontinued working full time until their two daughters graduated high school. Patricia then found her dream job when she went to work for Paramount Terrace Christian Church. She worked as the accounting manager from 1985-2006. After retiring from that position, she worked part time as a financial assistant at Hillside Christian Church from 2007-2011.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents and her devoted husband Robert L. Jones to whom she was married for 58 years.
Survivors include her daughter, Kristi Jones of Austin, TX; her daughter Shelli Sissel (David) of Bluff Dale, TX; and grandsons Dillon Sissel of San Antonio, TX, Bradd Sissel of Irving, TX, and Luke Sissel (Tessa) of Amarillo.
