Phillip Edward Hopson of Amarillo passed away March 30, 2025, at the age of 69 years. He was born October 10, 1955 in Killeen, TX and was the eldest child of Bill and Nelda Hopson. One of his proudest moments, as a fourteen-year-old teenager, was when he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was baptized at Pershing Park Baptist Church in Killeen. He was a 1974 graduate of Killeen High School and then attended Texas A&M University.
He met Teressa McDowell from Copperas Cove, TX in January of 1976 and were married June 24, 1978 at the United Methodist Church in Cove. Phillip worked in retail and was a manager for the Kroger Company in San Antonio, TX where the family lived for 16 years. In 1995, Phillip received a promotion and moved to Amarillo, TX. He was District/Zone Manager for Dollar General and then worked for Dollar Tree as Area/District Manager. He retired in 2022.
They had a son in 1980, Justinian, and a daughter, Shannon, born in 1986. He was very proud of his children. Justinian graduated college from Texas A&M University in 2002, and Shannon graduated from West Texas A&M University in Canyon, TX in 2010.
He was an avid sports fan and loved the San Francisco 49ers, San Antonio Spurs and Texas A&M football. Politics played an important part of his retirement. He wrote many articles for the Amarillo Globe-News Opinion Page.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 47 years, Teressa, daughter, Shannon and husband, Tobias Cooper, of Amarillo, son, Justinian and wife, Jessica, four grandchildren David, Arielle, Jonathan and Priscilla of Guthrie, Oklahoma, mother, Nelda, sister, Pam Buralli, and son, JJ of Killeen. Phillip was preceded in death by his father, Bill, two brothers, Charlie and Gary Hopson. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He will be dearly missed.
