Rachel Florine Cook

Rachel Cook passed from this earthly life on Sunday, Nov 1, 2026. Family and friends will honor her life at a memorial service on Saturday, Nov 7, 2026 at 2 pm at Amarillo Deaf Church, 3817 Holiday, Amarillo, TX.

Born March 17, 1937 in Happy, TX to Dyer and Fleda (Rice) Maynard. She was the youngest of 5 siblings, with Benny, Clarence, Hollis, and Peggy all around to tell her what to do.

She met the love of her life, Gaylord Cook, at the Bible Chair at West Texas State College in Canyon, Texas. They married in the chapel on the campus of West Texas April 20, 1955. They shared 57 years together before his passing in 2012.

Rachel and Gaylord moved frequently while he was a Church of Christ preacher in the towns of Woodward, OK, Groom, Panhandle, Kilgore, Wellington, Stamford, Spearman, Dalhart, Seagraves, and Gruver, TX. Rachel always made friends easily and left life long friends in every place they lived.

Probably best known for her witty personality, Rachel always had a comeback for anyone, anytime. She always referred to herself as a 'cut-up' because she spent much of her time cutting up old denim jeans to make her beloved potholders.

While she will be greatly missed on this earth, she has now been reunited with Gaylord, his mother, Cumi (who was as dear to her as her own mother), her parents, and all of her siblings.

Left to cherish memories of Mother (and Nanny) are daughters Gay Lynn (Darrell) Bonjour and Kim (Tim) Jones. Grandsons Josh (Libby) Bonjour, Joseph (Ashley) Bonjour, Quentin Bonjour, Carson (Alyssa) Jones, and Greyson (Sara) Jones. Also, great-grandchildren Noah Bonjour, Jude Bonjour, Jonah Bonjour, Luke Jones, Julius Jones, Ren Jones, and Reece Jones. She also is survived by a sister-in-law Ernestine Maynard, and a cousin Dr. Kenneth (Janet) Crossland, as well as nieces Pat, Peggy, Pam, Cathy, Debbie, Nancy, Kay, Sharon, and nephews Jimmy, Charles, and Tim.
