Ray Dunlap was born to Dudley Earl and Geneva (Gilbert) Dunlap in Amarillo, Texas on October 19, 1932. He was the last survivor of his siblings, Dudley Earl Jr. (Junie) Dunlap, Frank (Bowie) Dunlap, Billy Joe (Joe) Dunlap, Louise (Hart) Dunlap Secondine, Mary Sue Dunlap Washburn, and Dickie Leon (Dick) Dunlap.
Ray enlisted in the Army at the age of 20, and served his country in Korea. Honorably discharged on December 22, 1954, he rode the bus to El Paso, Texas, then hitch-hiked to Amarillo and was home in time for Christmas.
Ray could water ski, dance a jig, bowl, pray, play the guitar and sing a mean rendition of Hank Snow’s ‘Hello, Love’. He had collected enough tools and parts over his lifetime that he probably had what he needed ‘around here someplace’ to fix almost anything. He couldn’t help himself. Always willing to lend a hand, teach a youngster, solve a problem, fixing things was his forte’. Serving others was his passion.
Ray, Dad, Pop, Paw Paw would tell anyone that he wasn’t a perfect man, but those of us who knew him best, know that he kept his servant’s heart until his final days. For the last decade he had diligently cared for and protected the love of his life, sparring partner and wife of 54 years, Juanita Pauline, with everything he could muster.
On July 1, 2024, at Thomas E Creek Amarillo VA Medical Center, final taps was sounded for Ray as he stepped into his heavenly home. No one can fill the void that his absence creates.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Pauline, of 8103 City View Drive, Amarillo, Texas; sons, Sam Dunlap, Randy Dunlap, Buddy Osteen and wife, Dee Ann, Terry Osteen and wife, Cindy all of Amarillo and Curtis Dunlap and wife, Diana of Oklahoma; daughters Kim Valentino and husband, Joe of Alabama, Marcia Barrick and husband, Gary and Michelle Butler and husband, Tim all of Amarillo and beloved niece, Glynda Smith and husband, Scott of Tulia, Texas. And too many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews to name.
