Ray Leggett

July 21, 1933 — November 9, 2015

Ray was born July 21, 1933 in Amarillo to Esther and Frederick Leggett. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1951. Soon after graduation, he began an extensive career in law enforcement. He first started at the City of Dumas police department as a patrolman from 1954-56. Then in 1956, he moved to the Potter County Sheriff's Office, serving as a dispatcher, patrol sergeant and a captain with the criminal division until 1965. From 1965 to 1968, he took a sabbatical from law enforcement and was in the automobile transmission service, but his love of law enforcement was still burning inside. So, in 1968 to 1978, he joined the Amarillo Police Department as a patrolman working up to the narcotics division as an undercover agent. He then joined the Randall County Sheriff's Office in 1978 and finished his career in law enforcement as a criminal investigator, retiring on December 31, 1996, after over 40 years of service. He married Debby Deaver in Canyon in 1994. In 1997, until 2007, he owned and operated Ray's Motor Ranch. He thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of horses, but his one true love in life was his furry companion, "Hobo". He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Freddie Pearl Kennedy. He is survived by his wife, Debby of Amarillo; his children, Carla Reeves and husband Jim, Trudia Preston all of San Antonio, Ray Leggett, Jr. and wife Cheri of Skagway, Alaska, Frederick Gene Leggett and wife Sharla, Jayson Deaver and wife Tricia and Mandy Castilow and husband Chris all of Amarillo; 21 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
