After Richard left the service, he married the love of his life, Jean Young on July 6, 1956 in Gainesville, Texas. They went on to enjoy 65 years of marriage together.

Richard earned his Master of Divinity degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He pastored several churches in Texas, Oklahoma, Nevada and Germany throughout his career. Later in life, he and Jean enjoyed attending services at The Continental, where they lived. They also enjoyed traveling.

Richard enjoyed going hunting with his father in his youth, and later enjoyed camping out with his own kids while they were growing up. He liked watching westerns and loved dogs. Richard’s one claim to fame was that his great-grandfather wrote the lyrics to “Home on the Range”.
