Rita Johnson-Fowlkes

Mrs. Johnson-Fowlkes was born July 11, 1933 in Clovis, NM to Ira and Mayme Delaney. She has lived in Amarillo for over 50 years. Rita was a very outgoing person. She was a registered nurse. She had a bachelor degree in Speech and Hearing. She earned her master's degree in education from WTSU. She started the speech pathology dept. at High Plains Baptist Hospital. She was a member of Alpha Chi Sorority, and the Red Hat Society. At Amarillo College, Rita taught the Yoga for Life Class (50 and over), and a bereavement class- From Loss to New Life. She served on several boards and associations, including the Chamber of Commerce, Women's Council (Chairperson), Women's Forum (Vice President), and the Panhandle Regional Speech and Hearing Association (Vice-President). Rita also served on the Ad Council at High Plains Baptist Hospital as Head of Communication Disorders/ Speech and Language Disorders. She was married to George Johnson for over 35 years. After his death, she married Charlie Fowlkes on June 29, 2002. They were the first couple to marry at Craig Methodist Retirement Center, where they had met. She was a member of Polk St. United Methodist Church, for over 60 years, where she was a member of and taught in the Home Builders Class. Survivors include her husband, Charles Fowlkes; a daughter, Cindy Holderman of Amarillo; a grandson, Maurice Holderman of Amarillo; a step-daughter, Sandra Dunn and husband Charles of Ohio; two step-sons, Brad Fowlkes and Bo Fowlkes and wife Michelle all of Amarillo; a sister, Betty Blevins of Amarillo; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her late husband, George Johnson. The family suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 415 SW 8th Ave., Suite #300, Amarillo, TX 79101.
