Bob attended school in Montreal, Ontario and Island Pond, VT, graduating from Brighton High School, Island Pond, in 1954. Bob was a member of the 1953 Class C State Champion Basketball team. Upon Graduation, Bob enlisted in the USAF. He arrived in Amarillo, TX in November 1954. During his enlistment he was a Jet Aircraft Mechanic and an Instructor of Jet Aircraft Mechanics on B-47’s. While in Amarillo, Bob met Glenda Wilson on the dance floor at the Aviatrix Club, beginning a lifelong love for each other and their mutual love for dancing. Glenda was a student at West Texas University. She attended school in Hollis, OK, graduating in 1955. Bob and Glenda were married on August 13, 1957, at the Amarillo Air Force Base Chapel. Their first child, Robert Michael, was born on August 2, 1958. After discharge, Bob attended Amarillo College Auto Mechanics School. Glenda worked as a Bookkeeper for Manning Hollan, CPA. After graduation from Amarillo College, Bob was employed at Coker’s Garage. On February 28, 1963, their second child, Sharon Marie, was born. In April 1966, Bob and Glenda purchased Texas Garage beginning 40 years as owner/operators of that business. During their years in business, Glenda managed office operations and Bob operated the shop. They were active members of Independent Garagemen of Texas/Automotive Service Association during those years with Bob serving as IGA/ASA’s National President in 1983-1984.
On March 11, 1970, Sharon Marie died of Cystic Fibrosis. Bob and Glenda adopted Patti Renee, born February 22, 1971 shortly after her birth.
Glenda was an accomplished artist, specializing in oil painting. She has works sold and on display across the country. Her personal collection is now part of the Ann Crouch Permanent Collection at the Arts at Sunset in Amarillo.
Bob and Glenda were members of St. Stephen United Methodist Church. They were active members of the Amarillo community with Glenda’s involvement as a volunteer at St. Anthony’s Hospital and Amarillo Women’s Federation and Bob’s involvement with the Downtowns Lion’s Club.
They were able to travel across the United States and the globe together through the years, making several trips to Mexico and Europe.
Bob and Glenda are survived by their children, Mike, and wife Darleen Cheverier and Patti Cheverier; grandchildren, Alexandra Chase, Morgan Fickinger, and Karli Meyer; and Glenda’s sister, Alita Foster Davis.
The family would like to thank the Staff of the Community Living Center at Veterans Hospital Amarillo, specifically CLC-B, for their care and love for Bob during the last years of his life, you made all the difference.
Bob and Glenda’s request to be cremated has been honored. Their ashes have been combined with their daughter, Sharon Marie’s, and will be scattered along the Red River and Island Pond.
