Robert L. Harris, 88, of Amarillo, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday at First Baptist Church Sanctuary, 1208 S. Tyler St. with Rev. Corky Holland officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery.
Robert was born January 22, 1934 in Amarillo, Texas to Odelle and Elizabeth Harris. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1952 and went on to earn his bachelor degree in accounting from Texas Tech University. Growing up, he worked for his parents at Harris Grocers and on the family ranch in Clayton, New Mexico. He married Doris Ryan on May 29, 1954 in Amarillo. They celebrated 67 wonderful years of marriage before her death in 2021. When Robert met Doris at the age of 18, she was already a member of First Baptist Church. He became a member there, and together they served there for 70 years. They taught Sunday school, and Robert served as a deacon for many of those years. Robert worked for Pioneer Natural Gas as an accountant for many years, retiring in 1989. He was a pilot and flew for Amarillo Flying Service at Tradewind Airport. Following his retirement, he worked for the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church. Robert kept his grandkids as often as he could while they were growing up. His true passions were God, Doris, his family and flying. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris Harris; a sister, Mary Ann Babb (Pat Babb); and two brothers, J.T. Harris (Nancy Harris), and Jim Tom Harris (Margaret Ann Harris).
Survivors include a son, Dale Harris (Charmaine) of Lubbock, TX; two daughters, Rebecca Gulde of Trophy Club, TX and Cheryl Woodard (Mitch) of Amarillo; 14 grandchildren, Kortney Bowman (John), Kaylee Lodge, Christian Gulde (Whitney), Courtney Holden (Devin), Megan Woodard, Alyssa Gizzarelli (Anthony), Cynthia Abell (Dave), Angela Taylor (Christopher), Jonathan Gulde, Michael Gulde, Michele Gulde Cox (Cody), Robert Gulde (Cindy), Marjorie LaRochelle (Joe), and Laurie Allen (Russ); 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
