Russell “Rusty” Donohue, 80, of Amarillo, passed away on September 26, 2023. Celebration of Life services will be 10:00 am, Monday, October 9, 2023, at Trinity Fellowship Church, 5000 Hollywood Rd, in the Student Ministry Building with Pastor Kyle Wilkinson officiating. The Donohue family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 PM on Sunday October 8, 2023 at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home.
Rusty was born on November 27, 1942, in El Paso, Texas, to John “Jack” and Marie Donohue. He attended Texas Western University (UTEP) where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Since Rusty had participated in ROTC in college, he was enlisted in the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, serving from 1964-1967 in Vietnam.
Rusty framed his life’s ambition around his family, faith, his professional work and Rotary International. His career included Life Insurance trainer and producer for Aetna and vice president of American General, before becoming an independent contractor running his own financial firm. He moved to Amarillo in 2013 to join his wife Hollie Gandy Donohue at Safe Money Solutions and together they created Texas Retirement Solutions. His professional career serving in the financial services industry spanned over 55 years.
Rusty has been a dedicated life member of NAIFA-Texas, an advocacy group for Insurance and Financial professionals, serving previously as State President. He was given their most prestigious honor in 2022, The Lifetime Achievement Award, voted on by his peers. A lifelong member of Rotary International and a Paul Harris Fellow, his leadership in the Texas philanthropic community is highly recognized. He wasalso an active volunteer at Trinity Fellowship Church.
Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, John “Jack” Donohue and Marie Donohue; one brother, John William Donohue Jr.; two sisters, Jill Donohue Webb and Sharon N. Donohue.
Survivors include his wife, Hollie Gandy Donohue of the home; his daughter, Tamarah Schultz and husband Keith of Goliad; his son, Russell E. Donohue II of San Antonio; four grandchildren, Madison E. Donohue, Keith Schultz Jr (Jacque), Cameron Schultz (Randi) and Melissa Coley; four great grandchildren, Avery Schultz, Arabella Coley, Mikayla Schultz and Brynlee Schultz; nieces and nephews, Lori Tooley, Lesley Stigal, Sherle Robbins, Keri Mungo, Kelly White and Pool Webb Jr.
