Sammie Joe Scales, 78, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday October 11, 2022 at his home in Amarillo. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday October 18, 2022 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive, with Pastor Dale Mooreland officiating. Anyone wishing to pay their respects may do so on Monday October 17, 2022 from 2:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home.
Joe was born on December 10, 1943 in Ralls, Texas to Samuel and Myrtle Marie Scales. Joe graduated from Lubbock High School in 1962. He grew up heavily involved in Boy Scouts and was also an Eagle Scout. Joe was a passionate United States Veteran who served in the Marines and Navy as a Navy Seal. He served in the Vietnam War and received the National Defense Service Medal.
Joe married his sweetheart, Carole on October 31, 1986; together they built a life in the Texas Panhandle. Joe was a hardworking and dedicated family man. He was the President and CEO of Unicopy Inc., now known as UCI Documents, and was Vice President of American Business Equipment Co. Joe also was a Lieutenant for the District 3 Potter County Fire Department. He enjoyed deep sea fishing and hunting. Both Joe and Carole loved to travel and spending time on far away beaches. Joe loved the Islands of the Bahama’s and Jamaica. He was loved by so many, and will be missed.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Mike Scales.
Survivors include his wife, Carole Scales of the home; daughter, Tina Southern, son, Richard Bell all of Amarillo; one sister, Shela Hopkins and one sister in law, Paula DiBenedeto (Sal); two grandchildren, Torin Southern and wife Nicki and Devin Southern. Survivors also include a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
