Sandra Evelyn Gafford, 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday May 23, 2024. Memorial services will be 3:00 PM Friday January 16, 2026 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home.
Sandra was born August 5, 1940 in Wheeler, Texas to Marvin and Grace Simms. She grew up in Dalhart, Texas but went to high school in Dimmitt, Texas. There she met the love of her life, Billy Mac Gafford. They married February 21, 1959 and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to be near Mac's family. They had 3 children that Sandra stayed home with and also ran an in-home day care for extra money. She eventually earned a medical assistant certificate and worked in an OB-GYN office for several years. She then worked in an orthodontist as a bookkeeper for several years before retiring.
Sandra's husband, children and grandchildren were the love of her life. She was always willing to help and support them whenever she could. She particularly enjoyed having all 7 grandchildren at her house for a week in the summer, otherwise known as cousins' week. She loved to play card games and board games, especially canasta, and later loved to crochet Afghans and read hundreds of novels. Mac and Sandra loved to go to the Tulsa State fair every year and usually went several days. When Mac retired, they spent lots of time traveling around Oklahoma going to craft shows.
Mac and Sandra moved to Amarillo, Texas in November of 2018 and were happy to be back in Texas. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past February. Sandra, known as Grandma to her family, was much loved and will be eternally missed.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents; her father and mother in law, James and Marjorie Goins; her two sister-in-law’s, Dorothy Simms and Karen Goins.
Survivors include her husband, Mac Gafford of the home; her brother, Gary Simms of Amarillo; her three children, James Gafford of Wichita, Kansas; Larry Gafford of Spring Valley, OH; Sue Enger and husband Randy of Amarillo; her two brother in laws, Chris Goins and wife Karen and Gary Goins; 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
