Sax was born on March 22, 1923 in Westbrook, CT to Paul & Christelle
Murdock. He was raised in Connecticut and graduated from Hartford High School in
1940. Having received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, Sax proudly served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 as a gunnery training and small arms range officer at Great Bend, KS. He married Marian Ohlson of Grand Island, NE on January 31, 1946.
Sax attended the Art Institute of Chicago, where he received a four-year diploma in
Advertising Design and Illustration. He was Department Head of Tooling and Machine
Design for 27 years until his retirement from Mason and Hanger in 1986.
Sax was a gifted artist and accomplished musician, using these talents to serve his
Savior Jesus Christ in the churches he attended. He designed decorative posters and
banners for church programs and advertising. He served as interim music director at
San Jacinto Baptist Church in the 60's, and as director of music at Bunavista Baptist
Church Borger in the 70's and 80's. He and Marian joined First Baptist Church in 1981 where they sang in the chapel choir and served on various committees. With a heart for missions, they participated in eight trips to the Orient and South America. Sax served as a deacon in the Southern Baptist Church since 1965. He sang with two Amarillo school principals as the "Psychoceramics", entertaining groups around the Panhandle for 17 years.
Sax loved life. He and his family travelled through all fifty US states and to many
destinations around the world. He rode the Tidal Bore in Nova Scotia, snorkeled the
Great Barrier Reef, and bungee-jumped at age 71 in New Zealand. Most of all, Sax
loved the Lord Jesus Christ and praised Him with his life through music, words and
deeds.
He is survived by his wife, Marian Murdock of Amarillo; daughter, Pam Forsyth and
husband Skip of Amarillo; sister, Juanita Simpson of West Palm Beach, FL; 2
grandchildren, Lauren Purdom of Scottsdale, AZ and Paul Purdom of Jackson, WY
and his son-in-law, Larry Purdom of Katy, TX
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Paula Murdock-Purdom; brother, Steve Murdock and sister, Janet Murdock.
