Scharlean was born in Hall County, Texas, on November 13, 1931 to Mary and Owen Pyeatt. She attended school in Memphis, Clarendon, and Canyon, Texas, graduating from Memphis High School in 1949. She also attended Clarendon Junior College and Amarillo College. She was married to Joe C. Smith on October 22, 1953, in Clarendon. She worked as a bookkeeper for several Amarillo businesses, including Diamond Shamrock, Gibson Law Firm, Amarillo Hardware, and Courtesy Sign Company
Scharlean loved quilting, made gorgeous quilts, and belonged to several quilting clubs, as well as singing with Sweet Adelines. She also enjoyed oil painting and China painting, and she was a Past President for the Amarillo Federation of Women's Clubs. Recently, she belonged to the Etta Bita Pi Group, and in her spare time liked to work crossword puzzles, attend local theater and events, listen to music, attend high school reunions and family gatherings, and email friends and family. She kept up with all high school sporting events, and was well known for her stories and her laughter. She dearly loved all of her family and friends, and was very caring, and was always at the center of all the fun, as the beautiful "Matriarch" of her family.
The family would like to thank John Higdon of Amarillo for being such a kind and helpful friend to Scharlean, Joe, and the entire family through the years.
She is survived by her children, Melissa Hinkle and husband Steve of Earlsboro, OK and Jonathan Smith of Austin; her grandchildren, Joshua Hinkle of Austin and Dace Hinkle and wife Tashina of Seminole, OK; a great granddaughter, Madison Hinkle of Seminole, OK; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
