Sterling Ray Gibson

December 28, 1930 — May 21, 2015

Mr. Gibson was born on December 28, 1930 in Knoxville, TN. Coach had a long life that evolved around basketball. He began his college career playing at Western Kentucky for two years, took a break to serve in the Air Force, and ended his playing years at Texas Tech when he graduated with a Bachelor's degree. From 1958-1991, he coached basketball and taught at all levels-high school including 2 state championships at Portales High School in New Mexico, assistant coach at North Texas State University, and as Head Coach at Eastern New Mexico University. During this long career, he also enjoyed his two sons, golfing, barbecuing and of course watching sports. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and later in life he not only enjoyed his biological family and treasured friends, but also his new family and church. Sterling has been a resident of Amarillo since 1992 and will surely be missed. He is survived by his wife, Rosalie Gibson of Amarillo; 2 sons, Dan Gibson and Doug Gibson and wife Sherri of Wimberley; grandsons Cooper and wife Megan and Scot; step children, Ginger and husband Ron of Amarillo, Randy and wife Sherry of Garland, Billy and wife Libby of Amarillo and Barry and wife Debbie of Deer Park and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father-Robert and Relda Gibson, Brothers James, Robert, Rudolf and Sister's Mary and Benita.
