Vera Alone Cobb

March 14, 1922 — July 25, 2015

Vera was born to Charlie and Nora Belle Thornbrough on March 14, 1922 in Clinton Oklahoma. She graduated from Clinton High School in May of 1940. She left us on Saturday July 25, 2015, but she also left behind the body that had confined her to a bed for these last many years. This fun loving, vivacious, and amazing lady is finally forever free of those earthly physical restraints. Family and friends are all so very happy that she has moved on to a spectacular new beginning. Vera never remarried and now she can finally rejoin the light of her life who has been waiting for her for over fifty years. Johnny and Vera are no doubt dancing to the "Big Band" sounds of the forties and Johnny is laughing his butt off watching her do the "Jitter Bug". Johnny Cobb Jr. and Vera Thornbrough were married on March 1st, 1940 in Wheeler Texas. After serving their country, Johnny as a United States Marine in both WW II and Korea, and Vera as a "Rosie the Riveter" at Ryan Aeronautical in California, they settled back down in Amarillo to raise a family. Unfortunately Johnny died on July 30, 1963. His death was a result of radiation exposure he received while occupying Japan after the atomic bomb was dropped. Now alone Vera continued to raise her two children by herself, but she made sure that her son Johnny Cobb III and daughter Donna were both able to obtain college degrees. She was proud of her son and daughter but a special new place opened up in her heart when the grand kids arrived. They were a shining new light in her life. She never missed a wrestling match, football game, baseball game, soccer match, Tee ball game, theater play, gymnastics meet, or any other darned thing there was when it came to her grand kids. Vera's "Pollyanna" attitude always amazed everyone. "If you got handed some lemons then make some lemon aid". She never met a person she did not genuinely care about. If you wanted to vent about life's problems then she was there to help straighten things out. When she made a commitment she intended to keep it, and worked for Gray's Photographic Studio for over 45 years. The first thing that was asked when customers walked into Gray's was "Where's Vera"? She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and she had an absolute blast with her wonderful sorority sisters. Vera had a real love for butterfly's and now she can finally be free to spread those beautiful butterfly wings. Vera had 11 brothers and sisters and she was the last surviving sibling of the Thornbrough clan. A piece of American history has now vanished with her passing, but her legacy will always live on. She is survived by her son Johnny Cobb III and wife Beverley, a daughter Donna Levison and husband Richard; 4 grandchildren; Mistelle, Shanelle, Johnny IV, and Kristin and 12 great grand kids; Cade, Maddox, Macy, Case, Madison, Johnny V, Maxim, Aiden, Wyatt, Skarlett, Bailey and Channing. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to a favorite charity. The family would love for you to come celebrate her life on Tuesday August 4th.
