Verna Williams, 89, of Amarillo, died Thursday, January 25, 2018. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Tuesday at First Christian Church- Chapel, 3001 Wolflin Ave. with Rev. Heather Reed officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Verna was born August 23, 1928 in Granite, Okla. To William and Iva Files. She graduated from Dalhart High School. She married Daymond Williams on June 10, 1946 in Dalhart. She worked as a switchboard operator at Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. early in her career. She went on to work for Montgomery Ward and JC Penney as a telephone operator. Verna worked well into her eighties, retiring in 2013. She was an avid Elvis Presley fan. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Daymond Williams; and a daughter, Debra Ann Crockett. Survivors include a daughter, Connie Newton of Amarillo; a son, Daymond Williams and wife Amy of Amarillo; two brothers, Don Files and husband Marie of New Braunfels, and Billy Files and wife Sherry of Dallas; a sister, Karen Line and husband Jim of Dalhart; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
