Wendell was born on December 12, 1935 in Swisher County to James Samuel and Bennie Franklin Sluder. He was raised in Swisher County and attended school in Happy. He married Janice Chesher on November 27, 1957 Boise City, Oklahoma. He served his country in the United States Army. He was very proud of his service to his country. While in the army, Wendell was an M.P. canine officer stationed in Washington State where he was assigned to the Hansard Plant which was a sister facility to Pantex where nuclear weapons were constructed. He moved to Amarillo in 1960 after leaving the army. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Post office for over 25 years before retiring. After retirement, he worked at Arden Road Elementary School as a janitor. He loved working around the kids and they loved him as well. Wendell loved to fish and watch pro football. He also had a great love for Bob Wills and his western swing music. He was a Christian man who loved his family. He was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Sluder and by 4 sisters, Thelma Hagains, Dale Pryor, Margaret Spencer and Evelyn Barns.
His wife, Janice Sluder of Amarillo, two daughters, LaNell Martindale and husband Mike of Lubbock and Wendy Parker of Cedar Park. One brother, Will Sluder and wife Martha of Pampa, two sisters, Wilma Walker and husband Jeff of New Mexico and Phyllis Mathes of Happy. Three grandchildren, Bree and her husband Cody, Brant and Mackenzie. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews.
