Billy “Jeff” Hawkins, 88, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, July 15, 2020. Private Graveside services will be held Saturday at Gruver Cemetery. Jeff was born September 24, 1931 in Spearman to Perry and Lois Hawkins. He graduated from Gruver High School and attended West Texas State University. Jeff proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married JoAnn Crawford on October 3, 1967 in Spearman. Jeff was a farmer and rancher in the Gruver area before going into the Police Academy. He served as Chief Deputy Sheriff in Hansford County for eight years. He went on to work for Palo Duro River Authority as maintenance foreman until his retirement. In his spare time, Jeff enjoyed hunting, and working in his shop. He was a talented welder and woodworker, and enjoyed building things. Jeff was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Joann Hawkins. Survivors include a daughter, Jana McCarley and husband Michael of Amarillo; a step-daughter, Vicki Crawford of Burnet; two step-sons, Jim David Crawford and wife Sandy of Edmond, OK, and Joe Edd Crawford and wife Deby of Red Oak; a sister, Suellen Dahl and husband Robert of Gruver; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials may be made to Texas Home Health Hospice, 1934 Medi Park Dr. Amarillo, Texas 79106.
