Charles R. Chelf, 86, of Amarillo passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2019. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Washington Avenue Christian Church with Pastor Jim Shelburne officiating. Charles will be available for viewing from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 9, 2019 at the funeral home. Charles was born June 16, 1933 in Cherokee, Oklahoma to Charles Wesley and Dorothy Chelf. He honorably served his country in The United States Army from June 2, 1953 to April 26, 1955. Charles moved to Amarillo from Canadian in 1955. He began work for the railroad as a conductor, until his retirement on October 17, 1996. He married Ethel Faye Buchanan on January 17, 1960 in Amarillo and they celebrated 59 years of marriage this year. Charles was a member of The National Association of Retired Railroad Veterans. He was a faithful member of Washington Avenue Christian Church. Charles taught Children’s Sunday School and was very involved in the ESL classes in his early years at Washington Avenue. He loved the Lord and read his bible every day. Charles hobbies included fishing, traveling, woodworking and reading. He most of all cherished spending time with his family. Charles loved every one of all ages especially kids and treated everyone with value. He will be remembered as a loving husband, dad and Grandpa. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Roy Chelf. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Chelf of the home; two daughters, Cheryl Martinez and husband Martin and Linda Chelf all of Amarillo; a brother, Richard Chelf and wife Barbara of Amarillo; two sisters, Margie Heath of Alva, Oklahoma and Juaneta Coulter of Amarillo and two grandchildren.
