Donald Witcher Obituary

Donald Edwin Witcher, 83, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2020. He was born to parents David Glazener and Mary Elizabeth Brewer, on November 25, 1936 in Littlefield, Texas.

He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1955. He spent two years at Amarillo College and went on to study at the University of Texas, graduating in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts. Donald worked as Construction Supervisor for the Amarillo Public School System until his retirement. Don enjoyed working with teachers, principals, taking every opportunity to see his grandchildren while he was working and reading to students on his lunch break and after school.

He enjoyed telling a good story, reading, camping, singing, dancing with his wife and spending time with family and friends. In their later years, Don and Maureen became members of the Moose Lodge and Don was honored to be the Governor of the Lodge twice. He was dedicated to this fraternal organization and developed many wonderful friendships during this season.

Donald was drafted one week after graduating from the University of Texas, joined the Navy, spent two years active duty and two years reserve. Donald met Maureen when he returned from the Navy, marrying 90 days later in January of 1964. Together they raised three children, Steve Schmidt-Witcher, Mike Witcher, CeCelia Harris. They have 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Donald is survived by his spouse; Maureen Witcher; brother and sister in law;  David and Peggy Witcher; his children; Steve and Gail Schmidt-Witcher, Mike and Clara Witcher, CeCelia Harris; grandchildren, Shane and Tiffany Flowers, Lee and Courtney Oles, Eric and Kathryn Coppinger, Jayk and Jeff Coates, Mike and John Schmidt-Witcher, Baylee and Laura Witcher, DJ and Tiffani Harris, Jasey and Bethany Harris, Joshua and Halee Lomeli, nephew and niece; Kevin and Robin Witcher; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Jim and Beth Witcher.

The family has entrusted Cox-Rowley Funeral Home with the arrangements. Due to Covid, a private family memorial was provided. Maureen would like to thank all those who attended, and all the family and friends who have sent words of encouragement, flowers, thoughts, and kind wishes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Diabetes Association.
