Edith Mae Dawes, 84, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home Chapel, 4180 Canyon Drive. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.
Edith was born April 18, 1937 in Conroe, Texas to Lewis and Annie Barrett. She married Don Dawes on June 6, 1954 in Vega, Texas. Edith adored children and made caring for them her life’s work. She started out by caring for children in her own home while she raised her own family. She went on to work for Hereford Day Care for 35 years, raising multiple generations of kids. She also worked at the elementary school cafeteria for a couple of years. Edith is remembered by her family as being the best Mom in the world. Family was everything to her. She enjoyed watching her “soapies” and reading the newspaper. She was an avid Washington Redskins fan. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don Dawes; three sisters, Betty Cummins, Rachel Lee and Phyllis Guthrie; a brother, Walter “Bud” Barrett; and an infant brother, James Douglas Barrett.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna McKibben of Amarillo; a son, Stephen Dawes of Amarillo; two brothers, Paul Barrett and wife Joan of Colorado, and Lewis Barrett, Jr. and wife Sue of Amarillo; a daughter by love, Julie Crawford of Hereford; nephew, Jeff Mudgett of Amarillo; nephew by love, Dusty Smith and wife Briana of Amarillo; and many other nieces and nephews.
