Eric Overberg DeMar, 56, of Amarillo, passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2021. Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday at St. Hyacinth’s Church, 4500 W. Hills Trail, with Fr. Lupe Mayorga officiating. Viewing will be from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday, and 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Monday. Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 PM Monday at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home Chapel, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Eric was born November 13, 1964 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan to Art and Rita De Mar. He graduated from Jamestown High School in Jamestown, North Dakota. Eric proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, from 1985 to 1989, when he was honorably discharged, having achieved the rank of Lance Corporal. He earned his Bachelor in Education from Jamestown College. He taught in West Fargo, North Dakota. Eric went on to earn his Master’s in Exercise Physiology from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, while teaching in West Fargo, North Dakota. He moved to Texas in 1996. Eric taught and coached football at Clarendon High School, Slaton High School and Southland High School. He taught at North Heights High School in Amarillo. He was a swim coach for Caprock High School, Palo Duro High School, and for Amarillo Swim Team. He also taught college courses online. While in the Marines, stationed in the Philipines, Eric had learned to scuba dive. This became a passion of his, and he went scuba diving every chance he had. Eric touched countless young people's lives in a positive way and he will be greatly missed.
Eric was preceded in death by an infant brother, Kirk Andrew DeMar.
Survivors include his parents, Art and Rita De Mar; a sister, Debra Likes and husband Billy Joe of New London, MO; a brother, Scot DeMar and fiancée Dayna Wells of Pampa, TX; his aunt and uncle, Joyce and Mike Maher of The Villages, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
