Guy Lynn Welch
April 22, 1942 ~ September 30, 2023 (age 81) 81 Years Old
On Saturday, September 30, 2023, Guy Lynn Welch, DVM left behind his earthly body to meet his Lord and Savior face to face. He was eighty-one years old and lived in Amarillo, Texas with his loving and devoted wife, Debra Welch.
As the oldest child of Louie and Iola Faye (Cure) Welch, Guy along with his identical twin brother Gary, was born at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas on April 22, 1942. In 1944, the Welches moved from Dallas to Houston where Guy and his 5 siblings were raised. The rambunctious twins were rough and tumble and kept their parents always on their toes. At Reagan High School, Guy was an exemplary student, served as Junior and Senior Class President, played on the ‘58 and ‘59 city championship football teams, and graduated with the class of ’60. Later, he attended and was a football varsity letterman for Abilene Christian University and went on to study veterinary medicine at Texas A&M (c/o ’71). From that day on, Guy was the most ardent and loyal Aggie fan. Texas A&M was his undying passion, surpassed only by his faith in Jesus and love of his family, friends and country. Over the course of his career as a veterinarian, Guy was regarded by his clients as a highly skilled and caring doctor to the pets of Texas and Colorado. Guy received his Instrument Flight Rules rating and took the skies in his small engine plane as often as he could. He was a lifelong student of history, an avid reader, and had an incredible memory and intellect. Never one to shy away from political discourse or sharing his faith, Guy looked for opportunities to tell others of the saving grace found only in Christ and to participate in lively political debates. Having a heart for east Africa, Guy journeyed on several church planting mission trips to Uganda led by his pastor and friend, Jeff Anderson. Guy loved his country and freedom, the states of Texas and Colorado, to laugh and make those around him laugh - he couldn’t resist a good pun, watching A&M football games (his favorites he kept on DVR and rewatched often), snow skiing, camping, riding his Harley, and reveling in God’s majesty and glory in the Rocky Mountains.
Guy was preceded in death by his mother, Iola Faye and his father, the Honorable Louie Welch, former Mayor of Houston, his sister Lisa, his brother Gil, and his granddaughter Scarlett.
Guy leaves behind his wife of forty years, Debra (Debbie), two daughters and three sons - Lisa Cloninger (husband Kriss), Mitchell Welch (wife Debbie), Cameron Welch (wife Sherina), Dr. Jonathan Welch (wife Lyndsey), and Autumn Cornett (husband Casey) – nine grandchildren – Tanner Prewitt, Jordan Elissa, Presley Coiner, Dylan Cornett, Emma Cornett, Skylar Welch, Zane Welch, Phoebe Cornett, Clara Cornett – and four great-grandchildren – Michael, Elliott, Asa, and Eliza. His absence is deeply felt by his siblings – best friend and twin, Dr. Gary Welch, Shannon Welch, and Tina Mitchell – as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Guy was a proud son and father, and a caring brother, uncle, and friend.
Memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Chapelwood Methodist Church 11140 Greenbay St., Houston, TX 77024 at 10:00am on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Reception and refreshments to follow in Fellowship Hall. Please use Parking Lot C and enter door #10.
In lieu of flowers, the Welch family has asked that donations be made in Guy’s name to Covenant Bible Institute of Theology at www.covenantbibleinstitute.org or checks payable to: CBIT USA, P.O. Box 99, Pinehurst, TX, 77362.
