Janie Davis Obituary

Janie Mae (Roberts) Davis, 87, of Amarillo, passed into the arms of Jesus on September 23, 2022. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday September 27, 2022 at First Baptist Church, 1208 S. Tyler St. with pastor Corky Holland officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Monday September 26, 2022 at the Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home.

Janie Mae (Roberts) Davis was born March 23, 1935 in Huntsville, Texas to William David Roberts and Ella Louise Guenther.

Janie and her mother moved around following jobs since her father passed when she was 6 years old.  They settled in McCamey, Texas where she attended high school.  During her senior year, they moved to Pampa, TX where Janie graduated from high school.

While meeting with friends at the local hang out in Pampa, she noticed a tall, handsome, black-haired young man.  As fate would have it, they ended up visiting a little bit that night.  Janie was taken aback by how kindly he spoke to her. His name was Jerry Davis and he had just returned home from the Air Force. They soon began dating and her lovely life was about to change forever.

Jerry came from a family of 7 children and Janie always longed for a family like that.  After dating they married on September 5, 1954.  They were blessed with 64 years being in love until Jerry’s passing in 2019.

Soon after getting married, they moved to Lubbock where Jerry was attending Texas Tech University on a G.I. bill. They were blessed with two daughters while still in college and working 2 jobs. After graduation they moved to Amarillo and the family eventually blossomed into 7 children.

Janie was a homemaker for many years as the children grew, making sure all 7 were always well taken care of and provided for. She raised her children with a stern hand but with a golden heart.  She was fiercely loyal to her family and friends.  She was always available to support her family.  You could always go to her for advice or just a shoulder to cry on.

Janie and Jerry were business partners on several different business adventures over the years.  They owned and operated The Patio Shop, developed land and real estate in Amarillo and Pampa. They had The Country Store and Video store as well. Janie was involved in the Republic Women’s Group, the Texas Panhandle Builders Association and had her own TV show (On Your Backporch).

Janie, along with her husband, enjoyed square dancing for many years, did a lot of camping and fishing in New Mexico.  They traveled to Alaska in their motor home many times and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Janie loved tending to her many plants that lived for years.   She loved her animals as well, always having at least 2 or 3 dogs and cats.  Buster and Olive helped Janie so much during her final years, especially after her husband died.

She taught all of us how important love and family is and often expressed her hope that we would all remain very tight long after her she was gone.  And We Will!

Janie was preceded in death by her parents, Ella Louise Guenther and William David Roberts; her husband, Jerry Duane Davis; one grandson, Nathan Edwards; Son in Law, Roger Fox.

Survivors include her five daughters, Sherilyn Fox; Valerie Garrett and husband Frank of Amarillo; Teresa Nightengale and husband Guy of Flower Mound; Melinda (Mindy)Roberson and husband Mark of Amarillo; Melissa (Missy) Davis and Dan Appelhans of Friona, Texas.  Two sons, Kent Davis and wife Angie of Wimberley, Texas; Scott Davis and wife Hannah also of Amarillo; 25 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.
