Joseph “Wayne” Mitchell, 83, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2021. Funeral services will be 9:00 AM Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Wayne was born October 14, 1937 in Fairfield, Texas to Clarence and Velma Mitchell, and graduated from Fairfield High School. He married the love of his life, Jeanette Herring on August 4, 1961. That same year, Wayne joined the U.S. Army and proudly served until 1963, stationed at Ft. Walter in Mineral Wells, Texas. Wayne worked as a carpenter from 1996-2013 and was self-employed for much of that time. The last ten years of his career, he worked for Bank Design and Financial Design and Construction, traveling the country building banks. In his spare time, Wayne was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed taking his family to Lake City, Colorado on fishing trips. He also enjoyed hunting, and was a sports fanatic. Wayne played slow pitch softball for much of his adult life. He enjoyed hosting fish-frys for family and friends, and playing games, such as cards and dominoes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dana Dwayne Mitchell; and a sister, Laverne Mullins.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Mitchell; two daughters, Crystal Polk and husband Don of Amarillo, and Tanya Bertelson of Lubbock; a sister, Christine Lewis of Venus, TX; four grandchildren, Kelsey Polk, Katelyn Bertelson, Karmella Polk, and Emma Bertelson.
