Lawanda Davis Obituary

Lawanda Kilgore Davis, 80, formerly of Amarillo, passed away Monday, September 24, 2018 in Irving. Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Saturday at First Baptist Church Chapel, 1208 S. Tyler St. Lawanda was born Amandy Lawanda Penick, on November 24, 1937 in Boggy Depot, Oklahoma to Otis and Opal "Linnie" Yandell Penick. The family moved to Texas when Lawanda was seven and she became a Christian at age 11. She was baptized along with her mom in August of 1951. She graduated from Hedley High School. She met Kenneth Kilgore at church while he was attending Clarendon College in the fall of 1954 and they married on May 23, 1956. They made their home first in Coleman, then moved to Amarillo in 1957 and made First Baptist Church their church home. Lawanda attended Draughn's Business College in Amarillo. She worked for Amarillo Hardware for over 40 years. After a long struggle with illness, Kenneth died December 13, 1994. Kenneth and Lawanda had known Erick Davis and his now deceased wife, Betty, from earlier years when they all lived in Amarillo. In early 2002, Erick called Lawanda and asked to come "court" her and "court" they did. They had lots of fun times together and acted like teens when together on the weekend. They married on November 2, 2002. Erick and Lawanda enjoyed traveling to visit family and took long trips to New York State and other places after she retired. She packed up and moved to their home in Yukon, OK in 2005. She began to serve at The Yukon Church, where she enjoyed helping with children and serving with the women at Bible study. Lawanda loved visiting with friends at Yukon's Senior Center, singing with the Silver Chords, chatting with neighbors and adopting the neighborhood's stray cats. Erick died suddenly on October 13, 2016. Lawanda went on with her full life in Oklahoma. In March of 2018, she moved to MacArthur Hills Assisted Living in Irving closer to family, where she participated in events and made friends easily. She continued to visit family...going coast to coast visiting great grandsons in Yakima, Washington then to a grandson's wedding in Chapel Hill, North Carolina just weeks before her death. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Lawanda was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Kenneth Kilgore; and her second husband, Erick Davis. Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Smithson of Amarillo, and Karla Masters and husband Wes of San Angelo; a son, Larry Kilgore and wife Valerie of Irving; a brother, Wendel Cumbie and wife Joann of Amarillo; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be made to Yukon Church, PO BOX 850865 Yukon, OK 73099. Please sign our online guestbook at www.coxfuneralhomeamarillo.com.
