LeRayne Donelson Obituary

LeRayne Donelson, 85, formerly of Stratford, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024.  Visitation and viewing will be held Friday, February 2 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Stratford followed by burial at 11:30 a.m. and memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home.

LeRayne was born June 2, 1938 in Spearman, Texas to Bus and Alda Mitts.  She was welcomed into the home by her older sister, Yvonne.  The family later included brother Mel and little sister Linda.  The first few years of LeRayne’s life were very much Dust Bowl years, including living in a tent community in Dumas while her father worked at the plant in Cactus.  The family moved to Stratford when LeRayne was in 7th grade.  This was where she met her husband of 69 years, B.A. Donelson.  After marrying in high school, the young couple set out to learn to live together and complete their education.  While B.A. worked on his degree at Texas Tech, LeRayne finished high school with B.A. signing her report cards. They moved back to Stratford where they began a family.  This family included two daughters, Blynn and Barrie.  While the girls were growing up, LeRayne was very involved in their activities.  She was a Girl Scout leader, taught swimming lessons, and never missed a basketball game.  She was very active in her community.

After Blynn and Barrie went off to college, LeRayne spread her wings.  Her lack of formal education did not hold her back.  In 1979, she was a charter member and President of the Sherman County Child Welfare Board.  This was a springboard to many other organizations concerned with the well-being of children.  LeRayne was part of a group asked by the local district judge to look into an organization called CASA and see what they could learn.  LeRayne was co-founder of CASA 69, Inc. (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Judicial District 69) and a member of the Texas CASA board.  CASA 69 was the first rural CASA program in the country.  She served as chairperson of the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards, Chairperson of the Department of Human Services Truant and Runaway Advisory Committee, Member of the Child Welfare League of America and appointed by Governor Ann Richards to the Texas Department of Human Services Board.  She served on several other boards in the Texas Panhandle including The Amarillo Area Foundation, The Citadelle, and the play “Texas.”  LeRayne was awarded the 7 Who Care award in 1987 for volunteer service.  In 1990, LeRayne participated in Leadership Texas with a group of women she highly respected and truly valued their friendship. She especially enjoyed the annual class reunions help all over the state.

LeRayne was very creative and generous.  She loved working in her yard, cooking, entertaining guests in her home, and traveling. But most of all, she enjoyed being a wife, mother, and grandmother.

LeRayne was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Cone and Juanita Donelson; her husband, B.A. Donelson; son-in-law Jeff Breed; nephew, Tyler Donelson, and brother Mel Mitts.  Survivors include sisters Yvonne  Prichard and Linda Quinn, daughters Blynn Weldon (Tim) of Stratford, and Barrie Breed (Craig Lee) of San Marcos; 7 grandchildren; Carley duMenil, Brad Breed, Bailey Bryson, Maggie Ortuno, Taos Weldon, Colby Weldon, and Lindy Wetzel; and great-grandchildren; Noah duMenil, Rayne Schneider, Clancy Crenshaw, Chloe Northrup, Merritt and Oakley Ortuno, and Mack Breed; brother-in-law Pat Donelson and his son Cole.  Additional extended family include Derek Vasquez, Ana Guerra, and Kat Lancaster, and lifelong friend Gaynelle Riffe.

The family suggests memorial donations may be made to CASA 69, 414 Denver Ave. #103, Dalhart, TX 79022 or the CASA organization in your area.
