Margarett Eloise Bourland Hancock Obituary

Margarett Eloise (Bourland) Hancock 97, of Memphis, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on June 16, 2022. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00  AM Tuesday June 21, 2022 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alvin Walker officiating. Burial to follow at 2:30 PM Tuesday June 21, 2022 at Fairview Cemetery in Memphis, TX with Bruce Howard officiating. She was born at home on June 3, 1925 to Arthur Edward Bourland and Ida Elizabeth (Savage) Bourland in Memphis, Texas. She met the love of her life, John Welch Hancock, and they were married on August 13, 1943 in Memphis, TX. They spent 64 wonderful years together until his passing on February 25, 2008.

Margarett was a very loving and kind woman who cared dearly for her family and friends. She graduated from Memphis High school in 1943 where she developed a lasting interest in genealogy. Her first employment was working for the Perry Brothers store. She later was employed as a customer service representative at General Telephone Company (GTE) until she retired in 1983 after 24 years of dedicated service. She loved the LORD and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Memphis Texas.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES).  She had a love for music and enjoyed playing the piano, mandolin, and harmonica. She also enjoyed working on many kinds of projects, such as: sewing, crocheting, quilting, drawing, oil painting and woodworking.  In her later years she enjoyed working Sudoku and Jumble puzzles, and loved texting with her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Arthur and Ida Bourland; her husband John Welch Hancock; her brother, George Curtis Bourland; her sister, Mary Elizabeth (Bourland) Coffman; her brother, Arthur Edward Bourland, Jr.; her grandson, Cody Shea McDougle; and her son-in-law, Lester Lewis Driver.

Left to cherish her memory are her (3) three children, Barbara Lee Driver of Levelland, TX; Virginia Kay Hancock-Boyd and husband Jim of Pampa, TX; Johnnie Sue Hancock of Amarillo, TX; her (5) grandchildren, Teri Douglas and husband Dave of Elgin, TX; Tammy Green and husband Brent of Littlefield, TX; Stephanie Spillers and husband Bob of Clarendon, TX; Jami Ward Porter and husband Matthew of West Grove, PA; Jeni Ward of Amarillo, TX, (8) eight great-grandchildren, (7) seven great-great-grandchildren and other loving family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Fairview Cemetery Association in Memphis, Texas or a charity of your choice.
