Merrell was born on August 8, 1933 in Quinlan, Texas to Phelon and Hettie Bibby. He married his first wife, Wanda in 1953 in Dumas; together they had two children and made a happy and loving home, celebrating 47 years of marriage. Merrell served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed for a time in Hawaii. He would often comment on his time in Hawaii and the fond memories he and his family made there.
Merrell has lived in the Amarillo Community since 1955, working as a grocer, business owner and insurance agent. He owned and operated Bibby Burger for five years and later served as an agent with Farmers Insurance for 20 years before his retirement. Merrell married his second wife, Bettye in 2001. Together they combined their families, providing a warm and welcoming home for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Merrell was a dedicated member of Trinity Baptist Church since 1955. He was a deacon for several years and gave so much of his time to his church family. One of his greatest joys was leading the music for his Sunday School class and the senior adult Bible study. Merrell was a charter member of the Friday morning prayer breakfast group. For a time Merrell also served as the Sunday School Director. Everyone loved and admired him. Merrell had a strong prayer life and could often be found on the couch with his prayer list and Bible praying for his family and friends in need of Gods healing and blessings. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication and faithfulness that’s not often found. Merrell enjoyed spending time outside, working in his shed or in his yard and being surrounded by family. He always enjoyed a good laugh and some good Mexican food.
