Norman Hamilton

March 4, 1935 ~ April 2, 2022 (age 87)


Norman C. Hamilton, long-time resident of Guymon, Oklahoma and resident of Amarillo since 2016, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Heritage Convalescent Center in Amarillo. The family will be accepting friends from 5:00- 7:00PM Friday April 8, 2022 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

The son of John Earnest and Mary Jane Hamilton, he was born March 4, 1935 in Lolita, Texas where he grew up. As a young boy he picked cotton and in his college days he worked on oil rigs for spending money.

After graduating from Industrial High School in Vanderbilt, Texas, Norman attended Texas Christian University on a football scholarship. He was an All-American, All Southwest Conference, played in the Hula Bowl and was named the Most Valuable Player in the 1957 Cotton Bowl. He went on the play pro football one season for the Montreal Alouettes. Norman was inducted into the TCU Hall of Fame in 1978.  

He married Jolene Tovrea of Dalhart June 22, 1957. They went to Niagara Falls for their honeymoon on their way to Montreal where Norman joined the Alouettes. They lived in Lubbock for four years where Norman worked for Pan American Petroleum. They moved to Guymon in 1961 where Norman worked in the cattle business for about 34 years.

Norman was a man of great faith, taught Sunday School and was, for a while, Chairman of the deacons and church treasurer in the First Baptist Church at Guymon.  He was active in the Lions Club. He was an avid golfer and sports fan.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife Jolene of Amarillo and their two sons Greg of Mobile, Alabama and Gil and his wife Becca of Anniston, Alabama and four grandchildren, Kathryn Hamilton and Wil Hamilton both of Nashville, Tennessee and Justin and Julie Hamilton of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

There will be a memorial service for the family.
