Paula "Jan" Wheeler Obituary

Paula “Jan” Wheeler, 73, of Amarillo, woke up in the arms of Jesus on Tuesday January 10, 2023. Celebration of Life services will be 10:00 AM Friday January 13, 2023 at Family Life Church, 3900 SW 58th with Pastor Robbie Ashlock officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday January 12, 2023. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home.

Jan was born on August 11, 1949 in Amarillo to Edward and Neleen Wheeler. Jan grew up in a loving home and had a great childhood with her forever best friend, her brother, Allan. Jan excelled in academics and went on to graduate from Tascosa High School. She attended Texas Tech University and later married and raised her family.

Jan was always up for an adventure, and had numerous jobs, ranging from retail services to construction work. She even drove an eighteen wheeler for a time. Jan may have been tiny, but her spirit was untamable. Once Jan was your friend, she was a friend for life. Most of her favorite stories include her lifelong friends, Sherry, Judy and Mary; she loved these girls with her whole heart.

Jan’s family was her whole life. Her brother Allan and Sisters, Suzy and Terrie made her life so fun and colorful. They weren’t just siblings, but also best friends. Nothing could break the bond they held.

Being a momma, was Jan’s greatest blessing in life and she loved her children unconditionally; with her whole heart. Jan would do anything in the world for them. As her children grew, she took great pride to not just be “Mom” but also their best friend. Jan was always available with an open ear, ready to listen. She would counsel, cry or laugh with them at the drop of a hat. To be her child, was an honor.

The only thing better than being a momma was when Jan was promoted to Memaw. Jan loved and adored her grandchildren and was so very proud of each and every one of them. Jan encouraged and rooted them on through all their hobbies, passions, careers and all the dreams they set out to accomplish. Being a Memaw, she was then promoted to a new level with the arrival of her first great grand baby, Alma Jane. Days before she left her family, Jan spent her valuable time loving on Alma and getting to see her grow. Jan was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the newest great grand baby, due in July of 2023.

Jan lived a full and beautiful life, and she was often referred to as the sweetest person ever. Though small in stature, Jan proved that dynamite comes in small packages. She was a firecracker, ornery to boot and loved a good laugh and prank. Most recently, Jan would tell you exactly what she thought, never afraid to speak her mind.

Jan was many things to many people. She was a Mamma, Memaw, Aunt, Sister, Friend and even know as “Suga” to a few. If Jan was to leave behind a legacy for you to hold onto, it would be this: “Don’t cry for me, I’m with Jesus”. She also would have left unconditional love, memory making and always saying, “I love you” and follow Jesus.

Jan was greeted in heaven by her momma and daddy; her brother, Allan and nephew, Eric.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her two sons, Jason Dompe and wife Lisa of Amarillo and Tony Dompe and wife Kelly of Borger; her daughter, Carrie McMillan and husband Bobby of Amarillo; Sisters, Suzy Wheeler of Midland and Terrie Lee of Stephenville; five grandchildren, Payden Land, Mayson Dompe, Jamison Dompe, Austin McMillan, Braxton McMillan; one great grandchild, Alma Jane Land and one more on the way; one nephew, Cory King; Niece, Monica Chavez; Great niece, Arissa Delgado; great nephews, Brayden Haigood and Baylon Haigood.
