Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Dr. Services will be live-streamed and can be viewed by following the link provided. https://live.tcqc.org/

Rion was born in Amarillo on March 30, 1964 to Jodie and Millie McCarthy. His dad spelled Rion’s name after the constellation Orion. Growing up, he lived from one end of Texas to the other and ended up right back here in Amarillo, Texas. He played football in high school and never lost his love for the sport. Following in his father’s, brother’s and sister’s footsteps, he worked in law enforcement. Rion was an agent for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for almost 30 years before retiring on September 30, 2016. He occasionally helped with Law Enforcement Academies at Amarillo College to mentor and train future officers. His favorite classes were wrestling and driving. Rion married his wife Angie on June 9, 1990 in Odessa Texas. He was a loyal, devoted and compassionate husband and together they had two children Gary and Aubrey. They also celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this year. They were longtime members of The Church at Quail Creek.

Rion’s passion was history, working out at the gym, running, traveling, and his cats. Many of his travels centered around famous battlefields or ships. Rion never met a stray he didn’t want to keep. Cats that is. After retirement if not working out, he could be found with a few cats in his lap.

Rion was preceded in death by his father, Jodie McCarthy; and his brother, Gary Don McCarthy.

Survivors include his wife, Angela McCarthy; his son, Gary McCarthy and wife Eren of Hereford; his daughter, Aubrey McCarthy of Amarillo; his mother, Millie McCarthy; and two sisters, Candy McCarthy and Nancy Gay Parker and husband Landy.
