Rene’ Gunter Khoury, 87, of Amarillo, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, with her daughters by her side. Celebration of Life services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home Chapel, 4180 Canyon Drive, with Pastor Scott Egan officiating. Rene’ was born August 31, 1933 in San Benito, Texas to Earl and Ella Gunter. She grew up in a large family with nine siblings. They all received abundant love from their parents. With pride, Mr. and Mrs. Gunter watched their children grow up and leave home to start their own families. Rene’ moved to Amarillo in 1951 and started her family with her husband, Bill Dupree. They were blessed with two precious daughters, Charlotte and Teresa. Through the years, Rene’ entertained everyone with stories of her siblings and how they maintained such a wonderful relationship with each other. Rene’ was an amazing cook and loved preparing meals for her family. She also loved listening to all kinds of music, dancing, gardening, and was an avid reader. She remarried on November 29, 1972 to John Khoury in Huntsville, Alabama. Rene’ and John loved their life together working side by side at their restaurant, Sierra Madre. They enjoyed traveling after their retirement. Rene’s beloved poodle, Gigi, could always be found close by when anyone came for a visit. Eventually, Rene’ moved to Plemons Court, where she spent 11 wonderful years. There she found neighbors who became close loving friends. Rene’ was preceded in death by and infant sister, Thelma Gunter; her parents; her husband, John Khoury; two brothers, Wilburn Gunter and Don Gunter; and four other sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Beebe, Isabel Cannedy, Nita Chase, and Zelma “Sue” McClain. Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Rogowski and husband Rick, and Teresa Callaway and husband Kirby, all of Amarillo; a sister, Velma Frost of Wisconsin; two brothers, Hal Gunter and wife Shirley, and Bob Gunter and wife Linda all of California; five grandchildren, Amy Worsham and husband Jeff, Julie Dabney, Hunter Callaway, Blaine Callaway and wife Carrie, and Jason Callaway; six great-grandchildren, Ava Dabney, Luke Worsham, Libby Worsham, Will Worsham, Ryder Blair, and Reid Blair; and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
