Richard "Dick" Lloyd Johnson Obituary

Richard “Dick” Llyod Johnson of Amarillo passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 29, 2023. Dick was born on May 13, 1935 to Lloyd and Nina Johnson. He was a graduate of Amarillo High and became a member of the United States National Guard in 1952. A year later, Dick continued his service to our country by transferring service to the United States Marine Corps. He served with honor and dedication in the fight for freedom during the Korean War. Upon his return from Korea, Dick began working as a traveling salesman. He enjoyed meeting people, traveling, and sharing his expertise with others. After retiring from his sales career in the early 2000s, Dick dedicated his time to the Amarillo Police Department’s Handicap Patrol. He has served Amarillo in this capacity for the past 16 years. Continuing in his love for the armed services, Dick Johnson became a charter member of the Marine Corps League of Amarillo, Roan-Creek Detachment 992. In addition to his commitment to the Marine Corps League, he also loved the Panhandle Community. He was one of the community leaders responsible for re-starting the Veteran’s Day Parade in Amarillo. He served at the VFW’s All American District Commander for Veterans of Foreign Wars and was recently honored at the Tri-State Rodeo for his military service.

Dick was also an avid golfer and spent hours on the course surrounded by family and friends. He was a volunteer golf coach for Holy Cross Catholic Academy where he passed his love for the game on to his grandchildren. He combined his passions by teaming with his friend, Buck McClam, to coordinate what became the Annual Veteran’s Golf Tournament. For the past 15 years, he has devoted his time to making sure that the golf tournament was well organized, and lucrative. Through the efforts of the countless people involved, the tournament has raised over three-hundred thousand dollars to benefit the Panhandle Veteran’s Financial Resource Program.

His parents, Lloyd and Nina Johnson, sister, Nina Tomlinson, and son, Michael Ray Johnson proceed him in death. His memory continues to be celebrated by the surviving members of his family including:
