Robert A. “Bob” Smith, 92 of Amarillo, passed away on January 9, 2021 in Amarillo. Due to the current health conditions and the effects of Covid-19 the family will have a private graveside service for Bob.
Bob was born on January 3, 1929 in Clovis, New Mexico to Terrell “Ted” and Orene Smith. He spent his early childhood in Clovis, Albuquerque, and Los Lunas, New Mexico. Bob is a Veteran and proudly served his country as a United States Marine from 1946 to 1949. He was a devoted Christian and a member of Los Lunas Baptist Church. Coming from a railroad family, Bob followed in his family’s footsteps and worked for Santa Fe Railroad in locations from Illinois to California and many points in between. He made his home in Amarillo when Santa Fe opened the Centralized Rail Welding Plant in 1973. Bob enjoyed his retirement starting in 1987 after 36 years with the Railroad.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Orene Smith; three brothers, Terry Smith, Wendell Smith and David Smith; one sister, Nedra Hobbs.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Eva Mae Smith; two sons, Douglas A. Smith and Darryl S. Smith and wife Stephanie; one daughter, Cheryl Smith Melton and husband Bobby; five grandchildren, BJ Melton and wife Jamie, Jason Smith and wife Kori, Kalee Williams and husband Dustin, Josh Smith and Hillary Froemel, and Andrew Sargent; one great-grandson, Charles Robert “Charlie” Melton; two sisters-in-law, Marg Smith and Bobbie Lynn Smith.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to Lifeway Fellowship Baptist Church, 3315 Hancock Street, Amarillo, TX 79106 or to BSA Hospice of the Southwest, 5211 SW 9th Ave Suite 100, Amarillo, TX 79106.
